What is a Windows Service (Short description)

A Windows Service is a specialised version of a Service application. They run unattended by the user, which they have been especially designed for.
Windows Services are controlled by the Service Control Manager. This Manager is allowed to Start, Stop, Suspend and Resume Windows Services, as well as Starting them on System Startup (if configured).

A more precise description can be found here.

Windows Services in Windows Mobile and Windows Embedded CE

Windows Services can be created as well for Windows Mobile and Windows Embedded CE. The problem is, that these Services have to be created in native code, so that creating Windows Services for Windows Mobile and Windows Embedded CE in managed code isn't possible at all.
