What is a Service?

A service is nothing else, than an autonomous application. To be more precise, these applications are running unattended without any User Interface in general and in the background. Another name for a Service is daemon, which is fairly used in the Unix world. An example for a Service is a printer spooler. It is waiting for documents to be printed in the background. Another example is a WebServer.

Service applications can be run by themselves or can be developed as a library, which is executed by a Hosting application.

More detailed information on Services can be found here.
